I had to return an item at Party City and had accidentally thrown out the receipt. It was quite obvious that I bought it there.

They called a manager over, who looked about 12 yrs old, and he proceeded to tell me that I would need a copy of my bank statement, showing Party City as an entry, in order to get my $4.99 back. I thought that was BS but said OK and asked if they could put it on a giftcard. They said "We don't do that...Sorry!", with a 'you're screwed' tone, not even with patronizing empathy for the situation. They have horrible customer service skills because they kids running the store.

They need some adults in the store to show the kids how its done. Its difficult to accept the final word as a manager, from a punk with a huge hole in his ear. However, I realize they probably pay next to nothing for wages...so basically as a company...you get what you pay for...so I guess we should all just suck it up??

Party City is huge and often needed, but I will shop elsewhere. The thing that bothers me is, they don't appear to care.

It is very surprising to experience that you can't return anything to them for store credit after 30 days with receipt. You should have been the only store in the world doing that.

I stopped by Commack office today and tried to return two unusued/unopened items with receipt after 30 days and have been told that I can't return them since 30 days passed and wven I present the receipt I wasn't qualifiedfor a store credit or exchance. I thought that party city is a decent store but looks like I was wrong.

Well somebody is feeling some type of way... I'm 17 and a supervisor at Party City and I do my job very well.. We can't help you if we are following our company's policy.!

I understand that you would like a refund on your unused items. But you act like $5 is the end of your life.

And seeing as how you were judging them "they called a manager over, who looked about 12 years old", I probably wouldn't respect you or want to do anything for you either. And like most other stores, you need a receipt for a return. They are not Walmart and just pass by every single thing just so they don't have to hear you ***. They are party city, the place that JUST asked for a receipt.

No we don't have gift cards but you should have just done an even Exchange for something since I know for a fact they would have done that for you. Or you can just *** and moan and complain like now :)

I understand your frustration. You are correct - party city hires inept people.

I returned merchandise and was told I had to wait seven days for it to appear on my ATM account. Funny, I have done that before at the same location in Miami and it appeared right away. Not this time it has been 7 days and nothing . I called the stores and the have me te run around.

Also, no one asked me for my email. Maybe they should have training session before they place the associates on floor or with the te cashiers.

I am a party city general manager, in my store we make it our goal to make the customer happy. For a 4.99 purchase we would have applied to a merchandise credit for the next time you shop there.

We suggest that all customers provide us with a valid email address or telephone number so we can look up every transaction with the click of a mouse.

Well they should have made you happy. The 4.99 should have been returned to you.

I know the manager in the stores and most would have done it with no issue. Party City hires good team menbers. If you can not see past the age or how he looks I'm sorry for you.

If you called back to the store manager I know they would have taken care of you. You should have asked exchange for another item :zzz

I appreciate the *** out of this post. This is a company that I worked for for several years.

The return policy is ***. Having a receipt is pretty standard, but you are right there should be a way around it, they should be able to look up a receipt or issue store credit. As a former supervisor, we were all told by a higher up (granted, this is in MN where all the stores are franchises) that if he got any more complaints about problems with returns because of the return policy that he would issue write-ups. My first thought was...change the *** return policy then.

But no...the policy stays in place, the employees get to deal with all of the upset customers, and then get written up for breaking the policies for the customers, or if customers complain about the policies.

But, anyway, there is a reason you are being treated that way, and it is because the employees (including managers) are treated like ***. This company needs work from top to bottom.

This happens all the time people steal all the time. At the end of the day it comes down to which customer makes a big stink and which walks away quietly.

No matter what happens the employee should be keeping the customer happy regardless of policy.

Why don't they throw out the policy then? Those thiefs WILL get away with it!

ok so all of you who commented on this...

have you never tried to return something && not be able to?..

if so werent you pissed about it?.. maybe that $4.99 was goin to break this person?!.. yes it may only be 5 bucks but so what.. are you really gonna use that as an arguement?!..

&& the manager who had a huge hole in his ear would def be unrespectable in my eyes as well and im only 21.. so it's not like im an old *** who doesnt like juveniles!.. that's why you are suppose to look your best and presentable when you go for an interview!.. anyways!....

i have been in this situation and have been pretty pissed about it as well!.. if you don't want it or change your mind then what are you gonnna do?.. prolly take it back right?!.. and as for not having the reciept..

yea maybe they should have had it but they ACCIDENTLY threw it out!.. oh god no everyone keeps thier reciepts ALWAYS!.. yea right!.. and you can't help it when places like walmart allow it by giving GIFT CARDS..

how are you suppose to know that party city doesn't?.. and even though they don't they should be able to clearly see that it came from thier store.. so all you butt hurt commenting ppl please look at the name of the site... PISSED CUSTOMER..

im pretty sure it's ok to be pissed off at a store! that's what this site is for!!!

It's policy, they were doing their jobs. Stop acting like a $4.99 item is the end of the world.

Your life must really suck for you to complain about this. I actually kinda feel bad.

We sincerely apologize for your experience at one of our locations. We would love the opportunity to address this at the store level and do anything possible to rectify the situation. Please feel free to contact our customer service manager any time via email at wwoodliff@***.com.

Thank you,

Party City

you can certainly be upset that they didn't seem sympathetic to your situation, however MOST retail stores require a receipt for returns, that should be common sense. being very familiar with these stores they do not have the option of gift cards, which is not the employees fault..They did offer to return the merchandise with some sort of proof.

People steal, and scam then come in to return merchandise for cash, which is why they have the policy of needing proof of purchase, thus having a RECEIPT.. you can attack the employees all you want you are just upset that you Didnt get your way. Like most people you think you are special and deserve special treatment..

but you dont... so go ahead show those kids how its done so they can deal with people like you who act ridiculous when they are following policy and doing their job.
